Our Community at Heart
About
The Somerville Civic League was primarily formed to involve women in the community. “Our Community at Heart” is the theme of the League which was founded in 1919 and is one of the oldest , non-denominational, non partisan, volunteer service organizations for women in New Jersey.
One of the initial projects that the Civic League assisted with was the instruction of new citizens studying for naturalization. Today, we mentor and assist female high school students with attending the Girls Career Institute which provides them an opportunity to experience college life.
In 1923, the Elks’ club house on Main Street was purchased to become the Somerville Civic League’s first home. The center provided many community activities. After serving its purpose for many years, the club house was sold and St John’s Episcopal Church hall was the meeting place. Today, we meet the 4th Tuesday of the month at Mannion‘s Pub & Restaurant at 150 West Main Street, Somerville.
Over the years, monetary gifts were given to the YMCA building fund and NJSFWC Headquarters, Police, Fire, Rescue, Somerville Schools, Immaculate Conception & Immaculata High School, Churches and Jacks Kids to name a few. In the past, the League contributed to the Eye Institute, as well as the Douglas College Art Center, for which a plaque was placed. Additionally, a furnished room was given to the Hospital.
Somerville Civic League has sponsored a series of community entertainment, bringing noted artists such as Commander Richard Byrd, Helen Keller and Ruth St Dennis. As part of the Bicentennial Celebration, the League presented the Somerville Postmaster with a die hub cancellation stamp which read “Wallace House, Washington’s Headquarters, December 1778-June 1779”. Presently we have programs on Health & Wellness.
We continue to assist with maintaining the Van Fleet Garden. The members volunteer at Somerville events like the Turkey Trot, Girls on the Run, Toys for Tots, National Night Out and Wreaths Across America and more.
Our members have pride in the past accomplishments of Somerville Civic League and have faith in the future of our organization.

Keep us, O God, from pettiness: let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.
Let us be done with fault-finding, and leave off self- seeking.
May we put away all pretense & meet each other face to face without self-pity, & without prejudice.
May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous.
Let us take time for all things; make us to grow calm, serene, gentle.
Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straight- forward and unafraid.
Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences; that in the big things of life we are at one.
And may we strive to touch and to know the great common human heart of us all, and O Lord God! Let us forget not to be kind.
